The Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency RCREEE is organizing the Cairo Sustainable Energy Week CSEW, to discuss, analyse and evaluate the opportunities and challenges facing the member states countries and the region in drawing up and implementing their national sustainable energy policies, while focusing on how to ensure easy and reliable access to energy services for all the segments of the society.
Sustainability is a vital issue for the Arab World which faces a range of economic, social, and environmental challenges, such as, the increasing energy consumption and production, the water scarcity and the extremely arid climate, the waste management linked to rapid urbanization and population growth and the biodiversity loss as the region is home to a rich diversity of plant and animal species.
To address these challenges, the MENA and Arab countries have developed national strategies and policies aimed at promoting sustainable development. They focus on accelerating energy transition, promoting water conservation, improving waste management, and protecting biodiversity, however, there is still a lot of room for improvement and cooperation to build a more prosperous, inclusive, and green future for the whole region.
The energy situation in the world currently is very challenging and complex, it could have negative implication for the global efforts to tackle climate change, yet it nevertheless offers an opportunity to accelerate the transition to a more affordable and sustainable energy system.
